Description of service

The satellite cable TV service that I selected was one of the extended selections which included the addition of television channels which are not included in the very basic (and slightly cheaper) package. I shopped around between different satellite cable television service providers as well as regular cable television providers and after comparing them found that the extended selections package that I selected was actually not only cheaper than its equivalent with a regular cable television provider but offered more channel selections as well. Along with the programming that is included in the service plan, I am also able to view a large range of channels that are dedicated to music content and play nothing but music twenty-four hours a day. These music channels are grouped based on genre, decades, and similar themes. I am also provided with the option to purchase pay-per-view programming such as recent movies, adult content, and sports events. The cost of this pay-per-view programming varies from three dollars for some of the movies to upwards of two hundred dollars for some of the sports programming packages (which usually include an entire season). The access to this content is instant (with the exception of the sports programming, which is shown when it is scheduled) and can be ordered using my remote control, as long as my satellite receiver is connected to a phone line. I find this very convenient as it gives me the option of catching a recent movie on my own time without having to drive down to a local video rental shop.

Review of Service

I'm very satisfied with the satellite cable TV service that I have selected and believe that I am getting a good value for the price I pay for it. The programming package I have selected includes many popular channels as well as a rather large selection of channels dedicated entirely to music. I tend to leave my television tuned to one of those channels and enjoy commercial-free music while I am doing work around the house. I've also sampled the pay-per-view movies that are available to be ordered using one's remote control. The selection is great and includes movies that are just making their way onto DVD and video and are instantly accessible at any time. I like having the option of ordering movies like this as it spares me a trip to a local video rental store. Many sporting events as well as adult programming are available to be ordered in the same manner.

Overall, the satellite cable TV service is very satisfactory and only has one major downside in comparison to regular cable television service and that is loss of reception. This loss of reception can occur if one's satellite dish is obscured in some way (trees, large shrubbery, cats that decide to jump on it, etc) as well as during larger thunderstorms. Satellite cable TV service is essentially unavailable if there is dense cloud cover preventing one's dish from receiving a good signal. I've experienced such loss of service on several occasions as I live in an area prone to severe weather. The service resumes quickly though and well before the sky clears up; it appears to me that it's only while a storm is in progress and directly in the area that there is a loss of service.

Tips

If considering satellite cable TV service, the first step is to determine if it is even an option for one. A requirement tends to be that one has an unobstructed view of the eastern sky in order to receive the service. This means that tree branches could be an issue to consider and have the potential to obscure reception to the satellite dish. Once sure that the satellite cable TV service is an option, all that's left is price shopping. Different providers may have different programming and price package and the best thing to do is to first determine what channels are most desired. Once that is done it is much easier to select the best value out of the programming packages available. It's always easy to add additional programming or switch satellite cable TV service packages, all it takes is one quick call to the service provider and the changes to the programming package are almost instant. Something that may be important to some is the availability of installation service; many satellite cable TV service providers are offering free installations as part of an incentive for signing a contract (usually for one year) for their service. This is a great thing for those who don't want to be climbing around trying to attach a satellite dish to their roof or a wall. So, shop around, check prices, check incentives, and you're on your way.
