General contractor hired to finish basement was terrible  more... close row

Description of service

We hired a general contractor to finish our basement. The area is about 1,100 square feet. We wanted sheetrock put up as well as a half bath, a designated laundry area and hardwood floors. The general contractor charged us 10,000 dollars to complete this work. The sheetrock was hung, a bathroom built, a laundry area was walled off, windows were installed in the back of the house that is above ground and the floors were laid down.

Review of Service

The service was terrible. The laundry room was supposed to have doors which the contractor never hung, the floors were not level, the base boards were not installed properly so that spiders found their way in. The contractors were supposed to cut holes for the heating and air vents from the upstairs heat pump to heat and cool the basement but did not. They also hooked the toilet to hot water instead of cold so that when they left it running it drained all of our hot water. Work that was supposed to be completed in one week took almost a month for them to finish working half days if they showed up at all.

Tips

Get references, make sure that you check them out through the Better Business Bureau and get EVERYTHING in writing.
