the Cost of Emergency Medical Procedures

This is what the total bill was for my daughter's recent emergency room visit and subsequent admission. This price includes the emergency room visit, two day hospital stay, x-ray and ultrasound services, iv and antibiotics, and orthopedic surgeon fees for examination of the knee. My nine year old daughter developed a quickly spreading staph infection from a minor knee scrape. The infection was resistant to methicillin antibiotics and the infection was starting to spread to her bloodstream.

I think the emergency room staff did a great job acting quickly to prevent the spread of the infection into her blood stream and other organs. Because they reacted so rapidly, she recovered quickly and is now doing fine. MRSA is extremely dangerous if not caught early and can kill within days. So, I was very thankful to have such a great emergency room staff. Of course, the hospital bill is very expensive, but the most important thing is that my daughter is okay. I think that the price of medical care is always outlandish. Thankfully, our insurance company will cover most of the cost.

If you don't have insurance, find out which emergency rooms are the most reasonably priced or offer discounts to uninsured patients. The most important thing is to find out BEFORE there is an emergency so you know which hospital will offer the best care at an affordable price.
