Description of service
I took a one day 2 hour cake decorating class at a local bakery. The cost was $45 and included all of our materials.
Review of Service
I will say that I definitely learned a lot from this class. We practiced with real frosting on cardboard cake-shaped cutouts. We learned different piping methods, different ways to add sugar decal types of things and different ideas for themed cakes.
However, when I got home and tried to practice on a real cake, I found that there were a lot of additional obstacles that weren't there when I was working on cardboard. Such as, dealing with crumbs and dealing with the added weight of all the frosting and how to keep the cake from basically falling apart.
The class size was small so that was definitely good and I did appreciate the hands on part of the class. I also thought it was a very reasonable price for what we learned.
Tips
If at all possible, you should really find a class where you can actually practice on a cake. Cake is a different density and texture than other things and there are things to learn specifically about dealing with cake that I don't think you can get without actually working on a cake.
