$5000 included the cost of roof repair (rotten boards and beams replaced), removal of some of the old shingles (2 layers were left on), discounted metal roofing, and installation of the roofing.

The roof replacement seemed to go agonizingly slow once the discounted metal roofing was delivered as it was another week before the roofers were actually going to begin on our home. The day that they began, though, they showed up at 6 am. There was a LOT of noise going on throughout the day. In fact, I left home and went to visit a friend's house. I could not stand the flurry of activity and the noise level. My new roof was totally finished by that night, though, and I must say that it made a world of difference in the appearance of my house.

Figure out which roofing substance is best for you. In our case, we went with metal because of the look and the fact that we shouldn't have to replace it in our lifetime. Whichever way you go, if you want to lower your cost look for companies that offer discounted roofing. These are not necessarily "bad" supplies, they just aren't up to par for "Grade A" supplies. Chances are, you will never notice what's wrong.

Also, be sure to get references for your prospective roofing company. Always make sure they carry some sort of insurance for both your sakes.
