Description of service

In late January of the year 2007, I decided that is was time to get a broadband connection. Before I had free dial up, and it was getting unbearable. I needed it for schoolwork, and when I finally saved up $200 I ordered from my local phone company the most basic deal, 768Kpbs Down 128Up.

I live in New York City, New York, and this was the only one that was available in my area, to my surprise. The other deal was $30 per month, but 3Mbps Down 768Kbps Up.

The deal was to prepay $200 ($15 per month and $20 modem cost).

Review of Service

In about a week a little self-install package came to my doorstep. The installation was very easy. I just had to put the phone filters on my 2 telephones, connect the modem to power, phone, and computer (with an Ethernet wire) and run the installation disk. In about 30 minutes my Internet connection was up and running. Of course I noticed a huge speed increase. A week later, the modem broke unfortunately, and they sent me a new one. After that I have not had any problems. That same modem still works today.

I am pretty happy with my Internet service. For $200 a year, I think it is a pretty great deal!

Tips

If you want to run a web server on your computer, you cannot use the default port (80), because the ISP blocks it. If you want, however, you can use a free service such as NoIP to forward port 80 traffic to another port (I use 81). This ISP works with BitTorrent, I have downloaded lots of files. If it is not working at first, it is not the ISP's fault. Just port forward the port you are using for torrenting.
