1. Ask around. Don't hire just any attorney; make sure you are comfortable with him or her, and that the attorney is fully capable of handling every aspect of the difficult legal proceedings you are about to undergo.

2. Don't be afraid to interview your attorney. Most likely, you will have to spend a lot of time dealing with him or her, whether by telephone or in the courtroom. It is best not to hire someone who doesn't "click" with you.
