Description of service

The price quoted above is for a three hour meeting time with an accredited attorney and the completion and filing of paperwork related to starting a not for profit foundation in conjunction with obtaining the employer ID and the 501(c)3 status required of a not for profit to solicit donations from the general public. The service time included the filing fees of the applications, which were partially subsidized by the law firm.

Review of Service

The legal service was provided by a lawyer that had some experience and expertise in the provision and completion of the forms and legal needs in order for a not for profit foundation to start and operate under the auspices of the law. He prepared a checklist ahead of time to let us know what the specifics were in terms of what paperwork would need to be filed in order for the not for profit status to take hold and be valid, as well as help us to know when we had to file related forms on our own and what the timetable was for certain forms that we were filing at the time of the meeting would be responded to. The lawyer was very good about handling our questions about the organization and telling us the truth (sometimes the harsh truth, but the truth nonetheless) about our operation and how we would need to conduct business to stay within the law.

Tips

When seeking out a legal official to handle your needs, always make sure the specific lawyer you plan to hire for assistance is someone who has a specialty in the field you will be needing the assistance in. Sometimes, a law firm may advertise that it handles certain types of legal operations but not all partners at that firm may be as equally well versed in all areas that you might need legal advice in. In addition, ensure that all legal advice you are given can be backed up by the laws of your particular area, and avoid taking legal advice that may fall in some legal "gray area" where the activities could land you in hot water even if they aren't necessarily explicitly prohibited by law.
