Description of service

I went to a dentist because one of my teeth was bothering me and the dentist told me that the nerve of the tooth was infected. My treatment options were to get the tooth removed or to have a root canal done on the tooth. The tooth was in the front of my mouth so I chose to save it by getting the root canal. To do the root canal my regular dentist referred my to an endodontist (root canal specialist). Before starting the endodontist took one x-ray. For the procedure they numbed the tooth they were working on, cut a hole in the tooth and used a series of files to remove the nerve of the tooth. They used something that smelled like bleach to sterilize the root canal of the tooth. Another x-ray was taken. Next the doctor told me he filled my tooth with a rubber like substance called gutta percha and some sealer. A final x-ray was taken and a temporary filling was put in the tooth. The endodontist told me that I had to return to my regular dentist to get the tooth restored with a large filling or a crown within a month or else the root canal might have to be redone. The money I pad covered the whole procedure plus tax. The final restoration, which was done by my regular dentist was not covered in this price

Review of Service

The service I received was very good. The total procedure took about 45 minutes. During the procedure I had to wear a rubber dam; a small sheet of rubber that goes over the tooth to isolate the tooth being worked on from the rest of the mouth. Wearing the rubber dam was uncomfortable because I could not close my mouth all the way and it kept rubbing on my lips, but the endodontist told me that all root canals need to be done using the rubber dam to prevent the patient from swallowing any of the files used during the procedure and to keep the tooth being worked on sterile. It was something that I put up with to make sure the endodontist could do a good job. I felt like the price I paid was similar to what other people I have talked to paid for the same service and I was satisfied with the service I received. Finally, I must say that the root canal was not as bad as I thought it would be. My tooth was a little sensitive after the treatment but I was expecting the whole experience to be a bad one and it was actually not bad at all.I would recommend going to a root canal specialist to have a root canal done. An endodontist does root canals all day, so I felt they would do a better job than a general dentist.

Make sure to get the root canal done as soon as possible after you know you need it. If you wait a long time you tooth could decay so much that you may need to have it taken out.

Finally, make sure you return to your dentist to get a final restoration on the tooth. If not you may have to pay for the root canal to be re-done- you will have to pay twice for the same service and unless you have an extra $2,000 burning a hole in your pocket I don’t recommend it
