Description of service

Chinese Language (Mandarin) lessons are offered for 10 weeks with one lesson per week by this non-profit organization. Levels from beginner to advanced are available. In addition, conversation classes are offered for the more advanced student. The teachers are all native speakers and are fluent English speakers. Classes are offered evenings and weekends. A widely used Chinese textbook is used. The text uses a phonetic form of Chinese as well as characters so the classes are accessible for students who only want to learn to speak Chinese and are nor currently interested in reading Chinese

Review of Service

The teachers are all very friendly and make an effort to make the study of Chinese as comfortable and fun as possible. This is especially important as studying a foreign language is often intimidating, especially one as different from English as Chinese. The teachers are adept at explaining the grammar of Chinese or how the language works which is something many Chinese speakers can't do.

One drawback for the serious student lies in the fact that the classes may be too relaxed or undemanding. These classes are geared for anyone including those who are just taking it for fun or don't have the time to study because of other obligations.

Tips

If the school offers a free introductory lesson. Take it, since you may find out that Chinese is not for you. It is also worth looking at the the most commonly used textbook: New Practical Chinese Reader.

For the more ambitious beginner it would be well worth the time to get a book on Chinese characters
